Harriett
M. Wieder Regional Park is operated
under the auspices of Orange County
Parks. It was named
after Harriett M. Wieder, the first
female elected in 1978 to the Orange
County Board of Supervisors was
conceived in the mid 1970s with the
initial plan for park development
completed in 1992. There is another park
in Huntington Beach named
Wieder Park.
It is located on Lynn Street in
Huntington Harbour.
In 2001 conceptual design of the first
phase of development of
Harriett M.
Wieder Regional Park
began as a result of
collaborative efforts by Supervisor
James Silva, District II, and Huntington
Beach City officials to obtain city and
regulatory agency permits. Phase 1A of
Harriett M. Wieder Park is a four-acre
site of a 106-acre regional park.
Harriett M. Wieder Regional Park Phase 1
officially opened to the public April 6,
2004.
Huntington Beach Wieder Park
Wieder Park
includes a 24-car parking lot, open turf
area for picnicking, decomposed granite
pathways, toddler and youth playground
equipment, a picnic area, native plants,
trails, and a scenic viewpoint. When the
regional park is completed it will
provide an important recreational trail
link between Huntington Beach Central
Park and Bolsa Chica State Beach. The
park was designed to harmonize with the
area's environment through the use of
native plants and subdued and artistic
materials for parking areas, walkways,
benches and playgrounds.
Unique features
include creative challenging play
equipment called Galaxy that display
attractive, contemporary abstract
designs which encourage creative and
thought-provoking play for children ages
6-12. Similar to Galaxy, the Elements
tot lot area for 2-5 year-olds feature
units that promote climbing, sliding,
swinging, spinning and tottering fun.
Wieder Park has more than 2,200 lineal
feet of new trails (just under a ' mile
in the four plus acre area) and an
additional 520 feet of soft riding trail
spanning the street front portion of the
park. The site is further enhanced by
1,700 native plants. Finally its
1,300-foot wire fence protects children
from street traffic and serves as a
boundary separating adjacent private
property.
What also sets
Wieder Park apart from others is its
make-up of recycled materials such as
car bumper stops, trash can hangers, old
tires that encompass 9,000 plus square
feet of play area rubberized surfacing,
and crushed miscellaneous base parking
lot surfacing. In addition, the park was
graded to recycle water run-off. Rain
and irrigation water is captured on-site
to replenish groundwater using a
bio-swale system that collects site
nuisance water.
The County currently owns about 33 acres
for park land and expects one day to
gain access to the entire 106-acre site
that is partially tied up in private
development deals and long-term oil
leases.
