Huntington Beach is cool and so is its shopping. When Huntington Beach Mayor Cathy Green appeared on the Sharon Osbourne Show, she accepted the key for The OC TV series. If you seek something out of the ordinary, an item that simply isn't manufactured today, be sure to visit the historic building listed on the National Register. Built in 1904, M.E. Helme Furnishings Co. Antiques is located off Main Street on Walnut within view of Baskin Robbins Ice Cream store. From an Elvis Presley record, G.I. Blues to military uniforms sold, the store has one-of-a-kind collectibles you won't find elsewhere. Coins, jewelry, hats, gloves, dresses, children's play houses, furniture, glass ware, crystal, china, ceramics, books and thousands of treasures fill this huge shop that has served as a furnishings retailer for over 100 years since Matthew Helme began the business. Family members still own and operate the shop.

For a spin on California Greetings, try Kookies. It's been around for several decades selling not only beach items but also beach themed pillows, ladies boots and accessory gifts. You are in for a treat in this shop at the corner of Pacific Coast Highway and Warner Avenue. Also downtown on Pacific Coast Highway at 11th Street is a beautiful ocean view home for sale. It's a gift that only a small percent of buyers might consider, but the stunning ocean views from nearly every room spell luxury, Huntington Beach style.

If you want something totally HB, you can buy a surfboard and surf clothing from a number of shops. One of Huntington Beach's oldest commercial store fronts dating to the early 1900's, M.E. Helme, sells collector and antique items, plus porcelain, silverware and coins. Combest General Store is located at Huntington Beach Mall which is under construction and renovation and will be replaced by a new Tuscan-style center called Bella Terra. The village-style center will include an entertainment court, an amphitheater and a 20-screen cinema multiplex as well as restaurants and retail. It will include stores Abercrombie & Fitch, Victoria’s Secret and Express, as well as restaurants and a 149-room Residence Inn by Marriott. The Strand is expected to open in mid-2005.

The city's newest Business Improvement District elected its seven-member advisory board in September 2004. Over 30 merchant representatives attended, with 12 merchants nominated to the advisory board.  The Huntington Beach Downtown Business Improvement District went into effect on October 1, 2004, and is expected to set policy on issues concerning the shopping and dining experience in downtown Huntington Beach, especially along Main Street.
