Huck Finn Fishing Derby on
the Huntington Beach Pier is an annual event held each
August in Huntington Beach, California. The event
invites youth up to age 15 to come out for a morning of
fishing. Wear your best Huck Finn or Becky Thatcher
costume and compete for honors as the most authentic
characters off the pages of a book by Mark Twain, the
Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The fishing derby provides
free bait to use and specifies a time range to catch the
biggest fish, plus other categories. The event is fun
for parents and children, who are allowed to get help
from adults in baiting their hooks.

At most events, there are
many children who dress the part of the fictional
characters that sought adventure and rural lifestyle
along the Mississippi River in the Midwest. So popular
has been this series among youth that many schools read
the Mark Twain books, and many derbies around the U.S.
have adopted the name, Huck Finn, for their events that
usually include a fishing derby.
Huntington Beach's popular event has
participants coming throughout Southern California, but mostly
Orange County. Some say their parents brought them to the derby
when they were young. One pulled out a newspaper article in
which he'd appeared as a child. He shared that with his son, and
with us as he proudly brought his very own kid to teach him to
fish. Magic memories! This annual event is fun for children to age
15 years of age. Held annually at the Huntington Beach Pier, it
usually is held early in August one Saturday. The event includes
costume contest and largest and smallest fish catch, with
prizes. Admission is free and event is
sponsored by the City of Huntington Beach in conjunction with
Department of Fish & Game. For more information call Community
