O'Neill-Backed Rochelle Ballard Surf Camp

June 20, 2003 NOTE: Rochell Ballard Surf Camp was held in 2004 and will most likely appear in 2005. See calendar of event for updates

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. -- O'Neill Clothing has announced that World Championship Tour (WCT) standout Rochelle Ballard will hold one of her popular "Surf Camps for Chicks Who Rip" on Monday, July 28, 2003, at Goldenwest Street in Huntington Beach. The daylong clinic (starting at 7 a.m.), which targets intermediate to advanced surfers, coincides with the Honda Element U.S. Open of Surfing Presented by O'Neill, taking place farther south at the city's famed pier.

The second in a series of three instructional camps held in Hawaii (1/31 to 2/2), California, and Florida, the host is Rochelle Ballard (Hawaii) winner of the 2002 Surfer Poll Awards and considered one of the world's most respected woman surfers. She plays an integral role in all three camps, now in their third year.

The O'Neill-backed camps target female surfers ages eight to 19 and focus on what it takes to become a professional surfer and enhance competitive surfing skills. The Huntington Beach course includes instruction on yoga, training, coaching, and competition strategies. More than 50 girls will spend hands-on time with the renowned big wave charger and World Tour veteran.

Embracing the women's movement and Ballard's camp was a natural extension for the world's original surf brand. "So many girls have learned to surf during the past few years, and now they want to refine their competitive skills," said O'Neill Juniors Marketing Manager Malia Alani. "Rochelle's camp provides an avenue for them to take their surfing to the next level."

In addition to the extensive on-land and in-water training program, the series features guest speakers from the surf industry and women's pro tour (top pro surfers such as Megan Abubo, Keala Kennelly, and World Qualifying Series standout Melanie Bartels have made appearances in the past). Special guest speakers will also educate the girls about the sport's origin, leading back to the exotic Hawaiian culture influence.

A nonstop supporter/promoter of women's surfing, Ballard is "giving back" to the current and next generations, with proceeds from the Rochelle Ballard Surf Camp benefiting Boarding 4 Breast Cancer and IWS, a nonprofit organization co-founded by Rochelle to provide more opportunities for women surfers. "I enjoy seeing the sport grow and to see lots of girls surfing together," said Ballard. "I want to help provide an opportunity for growth that I didn't have as a kid."

Ballard and friends are in town to compete in the world's largest professional surfing contest, the U.S. Open of Surfing, being held July 28 to August 3. More than 60 of the world's top pros will compete in the six-star, WQS-rated women's division, also sponsored by O'Neill. At stake, $30,000 in prizes and a shot at qualifying for the elite World Tour. More information is available at www.oneill.com.

Girls interested in participating in the Rochelle Ballard Surf Camp, also sponsored by Reef, Bumble and Bumble, Surf Diva, and SG Magazine, can log onto www.sgmag.com for more information.
