Bartlett Park stands on the land that Huntington Beach's Newland settlers enjoyed nearly 100 years ago. It is one of the most rustic, natural parks in the city, located behind the Newland House Museum and Barn.

Bartlett Park is not your typical Huntington Beach park. It doesn't feature flat lawns with soccer fields or playgrounds with swings and slides available in most park locations. If not for the signage, you would hardly know that you were entering a park, in fact. Set on the top of a hill with vistas of Saddleback Mountain to the south, several dirt trails lead downward into wooded areas and grass thickets. Bartlett Park includes hiking trails in a wooded area. Wildlife includes rabbits, birds, lizards and a variety of flora and fauna. Overlook Park in Huntington Beach offers this rustic experience to a lesser degree.

Bartlett Park can be accessed from Coldwater Lane located between Adams and Yorktown Avenues and Beach Boulevard and Newland Street. Curbside parking is available there. Another entrance at the top of the hill is located near a large paved parking lot behind Mother's Market adjacent to the Newland House Museum. At that location, a stone monument with a commemorative plaque provides information about former Huntington Beach mayor Ted W. Bartlett for which the park was named. This is what the plaque says:

The City Council of Huntington Beach has dedicated this park to Ted W. Bartlett who served as mayor from 1946 to 1948 and as City Councilman for 20 years till 1974.

A native of North Dakota, Ted W. Bartlett came to Huntington Beach in 1925 and became a local businessman over the years through his generous manner and caring attitude, Ted became known as the city's "Goodwill Ambassador." He held leadership positions in many organizations throughout the city, county and state, giving complete dedication and untiring effort on behalf of others.

In appreciation of Mr. Bartlett's significant contribution to this city, its citizens and future generations, the City Council of Huntington Beach hereby dedicates this park of Ted W. Bartlett on the 2nd day of November, 1984.

Huntington Beach Parks

The City of Huntington Beach (California) is the caretaker and steward of the Huntington Beach public park system. Two departments involved with Huntington Beach parks are the Community Services Department and Park Maintenance. Park Maintenance is responsible for maintaining approximately 67 parks and public facilities, totaling 598 acres, 169 playground apparatus and irrigation systems.

Park Maintenance is also an integral component in special events in the City, closely working with Community Services to set up for events and activities that take place on or near park facilities. Community Services not only handles the rental of the park facilities but also operates programs for the public that include softball leagues, exercise classes, cooking, dancing and other types of interesting and fun things to do.
